What makes a window energy efficient in Phoenix?

Two numbers on a sticker, and one of them matters far more here than the other.

U-factor measures how much heat moves through the window; solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) measures how much of the sun's heat the window lets in — and in a climate where the cooling load dominates the year, SHGC is the number doing the work.

What moves your result is the glass package and the spacer, not the brand on the frame — and both are printed on a label you are entitled to see before you sign anything.

The label, and the numbers on it

Every certified window carries an NFRC label — the National Fenestration Rating Council's standardized rating for that specific unit and glass package. It is the only document in this entire purchase that lets you compare two windows from two companies on the same basis.

Definitions and ranges: NFRC.

Two things worth knowing before anyone quotes you.

The label is per unit and per glass package, not per brand. The same manufacturer's same window line will carry different numbers with a different Low-E coating or a different gas fill. "It's an ENERGY STAR window" is not a number. Ask which glass package, and ask for the label for it.

A window with no NFRC label is a window nobody has rated. That is not automatically a bad window. It is a window you cannot compare to anything.

Why SHGC is the number that matters here

The distinction is climate. In a heating-dominated climate you want solar heat coming in for free, so a higher SHGC is an asset and U-factor carries most of the weight. In a cooling-dominated climate the sun is the load, not the benefit.

The federal guidance is not ambiguous about which is which. The Department of Energy's advice for warm climates: "In warmer climates, select windows with coatings to reduce heat gain" and "Look for a low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC)... Low SHGCs reduce heat gain in warm climates."

The scale of the load here is the reason. Phoenix normal maximum temperatures run 103.9°F in June, 106.6°F in July and 104.5°F in August, and the same record puts sunshine at 86 percent of possible on average, with a June maximum of 94 percent. (That period of record is 1971–2000, so treat it as a climate normal rather than a current reading.)

Sunshine 86 percent of the time is the part most homeowners underweight. It is not the peak afternoon that runs your air conditioner — it is the number of hours per year that glass is being loaded by direct sun.

U-factor still matters. Heat conducts through the frame and glass in both directions, and on a summer afternoon it conducts inward. But if you can only interrogate one number on a bid in Phoenix, interrogate the SHGC.

The ENERGY STAR thresholds, and the honest caveat about zones

ENERGY STAR Version 7.0 took effect October 23, 2023. These are the certification thresholds it publishes, in the specification itself.

Note the classification: a sliding glass door is rated as a door, not a window. The specification defines it as "a door that contains one or more manually operated glass panels that slide horizontally within a common frame." So the biggest piece of glass in most Valley houses is judged against the door table, not the window table. We cover that opening in detail in why Arizona sun destroys sliding doors.

Now the caveat, and we are going to be straight about it.

The Version 7.0 specification text sets out these four zones and their thresholds. It does not define the zones geographically in the document we read, and we have not confirmed which zone Arizona is assigned to. We are not going to guess on your behalf and tell you Phoenix is "Southern" — a guess that is wrong by one zone changes the U-factor bar by 0.04 and could send you to a bidder with the wrong specification in hand.

Check your own zone on the ENERGY STAR climate-zone map before you use this table, then read the row for the zone it actually gives you. Note as well that the two hotter rows in both tables share the same SHGC threshold of 0.23, so on the number that matters most in Phoenix, the zone question moves less than it looks like it does.

Read energystar.gov, not a dealer page

This next part is the single most practical thing on this page.

Manufacturer and dealer restatements of the ENERGY STAR criteria are not reliable. We checked one large manufacturer's published summary of Version 7.0 against the specification itself. Its summary gives Southern windows as U ≤ 0.40 and SHGC ≤ 0.25, and doors more than half glass as ≤ 0.30 / ≤ 0.25 in every zone.

Both contradict the actual specification. The real Southern window threshold is U ≤ 0.32 / SHGC ≤ 0.23. A restatement that loosens the U-factor bar by 0.08 is not a typo you can shrug at — it is the difference between a window that certifies and one that does not.

We are not naming that manufacturer to attack it. Their windows are fine. The point is structural: a summary written by someone with a product to sell is not the specification, and the specification is a free public PDF. Open energystar.gov and read the source document.

What actually produces those numbers

A window hits a low SHGC and a low U-factor through four components. Each of them is a line item you can ask about.

Low-E coating

A microscopically thin coating that reflects infrared and ultraviolet. The Department of Energy's characterization: Low-E coatings "reduce energy loss by as much as 30% to 50%", and spectrally selective coatings "filter out 40% to 70% of the heat normally transmitted" while letting visible light through.

Those are DOE's figures about Low-E glazing in general. They are not a promise about your power bill, and any bidder who converts them into a dollar saving for your address without seeing your insulation, orientation, roof and habits is guessing. We cover why we will not quote you a savings percentage further down.

The spectrally selective point is the one that matters in Phoenix: a coating tuned to reject heat while passing light is how you get a low SHGC without a dark, tinted-looking house.

Gas fill

The space between the panes is filled with an inert gas that conducts heat less readily than air. DOE notes argon is "most commonly used because it is inexpensive and performs well in the typical 1/2" space", while krypton "has better thermal performance than argon but is also more costly" and is generally used in thinner gaps.

Argon is also chemically stable under UV, which matters in a place that gets sun 86 percent of possible hours.

The spacer at the glass edge

The least glamorous component and the one that decides how long the rest of it lasts. A warm-edge spacer, per DOE, ["lower[s] the window U-factor and reduce[s] condensation at the edge"](https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/window-types-and-technologies).

It also matters for durability. Peer-reviewed testing on insulating glass units found that aluminum spacers leaked more gas than warm-edge spacers over 70 weeks, that sunlight is "the most important aging factor on IGUs", and that losing the gas fill can raise a unit's U-factor by up to 32%.

Read that last figure against the thresholds table above. A certified window whose seal has failed is no longer performing to the number on its label — and there is no warning light. We go through that failure sequence in when to replace your windows in Phoenix.

The frame, and whether there is a thermal break

DOE is blunt about metal: "metal or aluminum window frames conduct heat very rapidly, which makes metal a very poor insulating material", and such frames "should have a thermal break — an insulating plastic strip placed between the inside and outside of the frame and sash."

Vinyl is "made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with ultraviolet light (UV) stabilizers to keep sunlight from breaking down the material". Fiberglass frames are "dimensionally stable and have air cavities that can be filled with insulation, giving them superior thermal performance compared to wood or uninsulated vinyl".

The catch — and it is the thing almost nobody is told — is that most vinyl windows contain metal reinforcement inside the frame, because vinyl is not rigid enough on its own at larger openings. We unpack that in vinyl vs fiberglass windows in Arizona.

Homeowners arrive at the same answer without any of this

The advice circulating in homeowner threads lands, independently, exactly where the federal guidance does. A homeowner working through a stack of window quotes puts it in one line: "If you live in a hot climate pay attention to the SHGC...the lower the better."

That is the whole purchase in a sentence, and it is the test that national replacement brands measurably fail — not because their windows are bad, but because their sales process is built around a price and a signature rather than a data sheet.

  1. The NFRC label for the exact unit and glass package quoted — not a brochure, the label
  2. U-factor and SHGC as numbers, per opening if the glass package varies
  3. Which Low-E coating, by name, and whether it is spectrally selective
  4. Gas fill — argon, krypton or none
  5. Spacer type — and specifically whether it is metal or warm-edge
  6. Frame material and what reinforces it
  7. Whether a thermal break is present, on anything metal
  8. The ENERGY STAR certification, and the zone it is certified for

If a bidder cannot produce items 1 and 2 on the spot or by the next day, that is the answer to your question. It takes about a minute to look up.

There is a number available — DOE's "30% to 50%" for Low-E — and it would be easy to put on this page in bold and let you assume it applies to your house. It does not mean that. It is a statement about energy loss through Low-E glazing in general, not a whole-home utility saving, and your actual result depends on your insulation, your ductwork, your roof, your orientation, your shade and how you run your thermostat.

Frequently asked

Is ENERGY STAR certification enough on its own?
It is a floor, not a ranking. Two certified windows can sit either side of a meaningful performance gap and both carry the logo. Compare the actual U-factor and SHGC numbers, not the badge.
Should I get triple pane in Phoenix?
Triple glazing is primarily a cold-climate answer — it targets U-factor, which is the number that dominates in a heating climate. In Phoenix, money spent on a better Low-E coating and a warm-edge spacer is usually working harder than money spent on a third pane. Get both quoted and compare the SHGC.
Will low-SHGC glass make my house dark?
Not necessarily. That is exactly what a spectrally selective coating is for — DOE describes it as filtering heat while letting visible light through. Visible Transmittance on the NFRC label is the number to check.
Do window films do the same thing?
Film can lower solar heat gain on glass you are keeping, and on a young window with a sound seal that can be a reasonable step. It does nothing for a failed seal, a leaking frame or a metal frame conducting heat, and some films affect manufacturer glass warranties. Check yours before applying anything.
My windows are certified but the house is still hot. Why?
Two common reasons. Either the certification is for a specification that is not what got installed, or the seal has failed and the unit is no longer performing to its label — gas loss alone can raise a unit's U-factor by up to 32% according to published research. Also worth ruling out the attic and the ductwork before blaming the glass.
What is the minimum job?
